Hippie Popcorn Recipe

Hippie Nutritional Yeast Popcorn: A Simple, Nourishing Snack for Movie Nights and Everyday Cravings

Sometimes the best recipes are the simplest ones.

This is one of those recipes.

A friend introduced me to what she called Hippie Popcorn years ago. She made it as a nourishing snack for her children, and after trying it once, I was hooked.

At first, I’ll admit I was a little skeptical. Nutritional yeast has a distinctive smell that takes some getting used to.

But then I tasted it.

The combination of buttery popcorn, sea salt, and nutritional yeast creates a rich, savory flavor that is surprisingly delicious. It adds a slightly cheesy, nutty, buttery taste without actually containing cheese.

Over the years, this has become one of our favorite snacks for movie nights, afternoon cravings, and those moments when we want something satisfying but still relatively wholesome.

It’s simple, budget-friendly, and made with ingredients we usually have on hand.

Why We Love This Healthy Hippie Nutritional Yeast Popcorn Recipe

✔ Simple ingredients

✔ Ready in minutes

✔ Family friendly

✔ Naturally vegetarian

✔ Contains fiber from whole grain popcorn

✔ Nutritional yeast provides B vitamins and a savory flavor boost

And perhaps most importantly…

It’s just really good.

What Is Nutritional Yeast?

Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast commonly used in cooking for its savory, cheesy flavor.

It is naturally rich in several B vitamins and is often fortified with additional B vitamins, including vitamin B12.

If you’ve never tried it before, don’t judge it by the smell alone. The aroma can be a little unusual at first, but once mixed with warm butter, popcorn, and sea salt, it transforms into something surprisingly delicious.

Fun fact: because nutritional yeast can contain large amounts of B vitamins, some people notice bright yellow urine after eating larger amounts. This is simply excess water-soluble vitamins being excreted and is generally harmless.

The oils listed in this recipe have a higher smoke point than many other oils. This is important for best flavor, retaining nutritional value, and preventing the release of toxic compounds that occur when an oil reaches it’s smoke point.
  • Avocado Oil – Provides more of a neutral taste allowing toppings to shine.
  • Refined Coconut Oil – Gives popcorn a light, crisp texture, and a subtle rich taste.
  • Ghee – Creates popcorn with a rich, nutty, and buttery flavor without soggy kernels. If using ghee, you may even omit the melted butter or ghee topping altogether!
